Find a Family or Divorce Court in Ontario

Looking for a family courthouse, filing a divorce application, resolving a parenting dispute, or seeking child or spousal support?

Ontario has three types of courts that handle family law matters: the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice, and the Family Court branch of the Superior Court of Justice, sometimes called Unified Family Court.

The Superior Court has exclusive jurisdiction over divorce and family property matters.

The Ontario Court of Justice handles certain other family proceedings, while Unified Family Court locations can hear the full range of family law matters.

Before beginning court proceedings, you should seriously consider family mediation as legal costs can be alarming.

Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General funds free on-site and subsidized off-site family mediation services throughout the province.

These services may help families resolve disagreements without a contested hearing. Ontario

Ontario Family Mediation — Free and Low-Cost Services Through the Ministry of the Attorney General

Family mediation is an important alternative to litigation for people separating, divorcing, or trying to resolve disputes about children, support, and property.

The Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General funds free on-site family mediation at family courthouses, as well as low-cost off-site mediation, where fees are based on income and dependants. Ontario

What can a family mediator help with?

  • Parenting schedules, parenting time and decision-making responsibility.
  • Child support and spousal support.
  • Division of property and financial arrangements.
  • Communication between separating spouses or parents.
  • Negotiating agreements that may avoid or narrow court proceedings.

A mediator is a neutral professional who facilitates discussion and negotiation. A mediator does not act as either person’s lawyer, cannot impose a settlement, and generally does not give independent legal advice to either party. Parties should obtain independent legal advice before finalizing significant agreements.

Mediation is voluntary and may be inappropriate or require special safeguards where there is family violence, coercive control, intimidation, or a serious power imbalance. Mediators should screen for these concerns.

Family Law Information Centres — Free Information at Ontario Courthouses
